Nowadays many people use the term “3d printing” as a synonym of the additive manufacturing processes. But there are actually the 7 categories of the additive manufacturing which differs in terms of process and equipment types and material forms and their properties.
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) group “ASTM F42 – Additive Manufacturing”, made the set of standards to classify the additive manufacturing into 7 categories.
The Catagories of Additive Manufacturing are:
- VAT Photopolymerization
- Material Extrusion
- Powder Bed Fusion
- Sheet Lamination
- Direct Energy Deposition
- Material Jetting
- Binder Jetting
The most popular additive manufacturing as 3D printing we are seeing and using as prosumers is FDM followed by the SLA, SLS.
